The Bottle On the Bar
Copyright 2004: Second Wind

On the day that my best friend passed away
He spoke not of the crazy things he'd done
Instead of talking 'bout the times we'd partied 'til the morning light
He longed to have the days we'd wasted, recuperating

For all the doctor had to give my friend was ten days until the end
And we couldn't help but think of all the times
That good fun had to wait until the headache went away
What we'd put off for tomorrow had now become today

Today is tomorrow, tomorrow is today
The plans we'd made, now were laid to rest for eternity
And lord, can you help me or have I gone too far
To put my family first, my head on straight
And the bottle on the bar

We worked real hard and partied even harder
We missed the soccer games and Sunday at church
For everyone was plain to see the worst ahead for him and me
And what I heard in his last breath scared me to death

Now I spend my nights with my wife, the kids and all their friends
And i urge you all to do the very same
Tell them how the story goes of Lee & his best friend named Joe
The day they had to say goodbye and let each other go

Chorus

Lord, can you help me put this damned old bottle on the bar?

"The Bottle On the Bar" is a fictional song I wrote, but making reference to my friend and I at the same time. This song is actually was written about my best friend Rick and I. No, Rick didn't die, actually he is now the bass player for The Bounty Hunters, but him and I used to do alot of partying together.  I wondered what it would be like if the lifestyle ever got the best of one of us and that's what I tried to portray with this song. We've since grown up a bit, but still manage to throw some beers back together!
